Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will address the Greek parliament via teleconference next week, it was reported on Saturday.
According to government sources, Ukrainian Ambassador to Greece Sergii Shutenko will be received by President of the Hellenic Parliament Constantine Tassoulas on Monday to finalize the details, but it is expected that Zelensky’s address will take place either on Wednesday or Thursday.
Zelensky appeals to legislatures of the world
Zelensky, who has become a household name across the world as a brave wartime president in the face of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, has directly spoken to legislatures around the world via teleconference.
He appealed to Congress for help last week in a historic speech, telling US lawmakers “we need you right now” as he invoked tragedies in American history like the attack on Pearl Harbor and the September 11 terrorist attack.
The speech, which was given as a virtual address to members of Congress, came as the United States is under pressure from Ukraine to supply more military assistance to the embattled country as it fights back against Russia’s deadly attack.
At the conclusion of his remarks, Zelensky had an impassioned message for President Joe Biden, saying, “You are the leader of your great nation. I wish you to be the leader of the world. Being the leader of the world means to be the leader of peace.”
Biden later pledged ongoing US aid to Ukraine and announced an additional $800 million in security assistance as he condemned Russia’s attacks in a speech of his own.
Earlier in March Zelensky spoke before members of the UK Parliament in the House of Commons where he was met with a rare round of applause from the MPs. It is against the House of Commons rules to clap.
In his address to MPs, he stressed the brutality of the war and pushed them to consider the existential threat his country is under in the wake of the Russian invasion. He also urged lawmakers to insist on strong sanctions against Russia, which he called a “terrorist state.”
“Please increase the pressure of sanctions against this country and please recognize this country as a terrorist state…Please make sure our Ukrainian skies are safe, please make sure you do what needs to be done and what is stipulated by the greatness of your country.”
